February 2002 Haul-Out - Part 2

 (Back to Haul-Out Part 1 )

Here are more pictures of the Haul Out done late February 2002.
I wanted to replace the propeller because the old one was too large for the boat to get full rpm..I was missing about 500 rpm, which is about 1/4 of it's rpm. And, the old propeller was badly pitted from electrolysis from a time before I owned her.

The boat was out of the water for a total of 3 days...the manger of the ship yard had actually taken my boat out as a sort of favor to me while they were not busy..all of a sudden the ship yard got very busy and they needed the dry dock space that my boat was occupying..they finished up as much as they could of replacing the caulking and fixing the leaks...but, there is still some to do.  So, in a few months or so, or whenever they are not so busy, I will have it hauled out again and the rest completed.

The HollyB's hull is made of wood planks of Douglas Fir that are about 1-1/2" thick.

On wooden planked boats/ships...what keeps the planks from leaking water between the planks is usually cotton or oakum.

Usually the smaller seams receive the cotton, and the deeper/wider seams receive the oakum.

I had painted the bottom of the boat 2 years ago first with 2 coats of blue bottom paint and then 4 coats of red bottom paint.  I used the two colors so when the top coats were starting to wear off, you would then know it was time to haul out...I was surprised to find that most of the bottom paint was still intact after two years...

Here, the bottom has been washed with a hi pressure water spray..It removes the sea growth and the loose paint.

Old Prop and the Rudder area after cleaning...

Bottom cleaned and old caulking along garboard being removed..the garboard is the plank that runs right next to the keel on both sides of the keel....

The old bad caulking and cotton removed..This is the new oakum being put into the seam..the seam will then be covered over with a compound to seal the seam....

After the caulking is done, everything is taped off and the first coat of bottom paint applied....

Most of the bottom recaulked and all repainted.....

New Zincs on the bottom, New Propeller, New Paint..Looks a lot better down here....

Close up of the New Propeller...

Another Stern Shot.....

Ready to go back in the water....
